Joana Maçanita has made wines across Portugal and gained early rigour at Haselgrove in South Australia. Since 2006 she has worked mainly in the Algarve and expanded her digital presence and online shop during COVID. A driven, experimental winemaker who emphasises emotional involvement, she found early support in northern Portugal. Recently Joana and her brother António launched Maçanita in the Douro’s Cima Corgo, focusing on micro‑terroirs and very old vines, promising exciting new exceptional wines.
Rita Cardoso Pinto is an enologist and project leader at Quinta do Pinto in Alenquer. From a family rooted in viticulture, she studied management and oenology and now oversees vineyard management, winemaking and modernization efforts. Rita emphasizes terroir-driven wines, precise cellar work and sustainable practices, blending tradition with contemporary techniques. She has led quality improvements, expanded the estate’s national and international presence, and coordinates tastings and educational initiatives that showcase Quinta do Pinto’s range.
Dorina Lindemann runs Quinta da Plansel in Montemor‑o‑Novo (Alentejo), an innovative, research‑based project developed with winemaker Carlos Ramos. Across about 75 hectares of vineyard, among cork oaks and olive trees, she focuses on Touriga Nacional, exploiting cool nights and iron‑rich soils that provide structure and a subtle salinity. The estate produces elegant wines with discreet oak ageing, floral aromas and firm tannins. Her daughters Júlia and Luísa are involved in the project—Júlia handling brand communication and Luísa managing wine tourism—reinforcing its family dimension. Plansel is also a knowledge hub: it conducts varietal selection and monovarietal research, runs a nursery supplying vine plants to other wineries, and houses an art gallery linked to the family collection of Hans Jörg Böhm. It was the first winery in Portugal approved to teach WSET courses (Levels 1 and 2) and is preparing four accommodations beside the 12th‑century chapel.
Joana Pinhão combines passion, training and innovation. Born in Alpiarça, she studied Viticulture and Enology at Instituto Superior de Agronomia and interned at Casa Cadaval. She joined Quinta Vale Dona Maria/Van Zeller & Co., spending a decade on Douro and Porto wines. She gained experience in Toro and South Africa, co‑founded Somnium, then returned to Tejo to reconvert Charneca vineyards and launched Casal das Aires. She now works actively at Quinta da Barca since 2021.
Anabela Tereso is owner and guiding force behind Quinta da Atela, a boutique winery in Portugal’s Tejo region. She combines tradition with modern viticulture, tending old vines and highlighting native varieties to produce elegant, terroir-driven wines. Under her leadership the estate emphasizes sustainable practices, small-batch fermentations, and judicious oak aging to build complexity without obscuring identity. Her wines have earned national recognition, boosted local enotourism, and reinforced Quinta da Atela’s reputation for balanced, age-worthy bottles.
Leonor Freitas is CEO of Casa Ermelinda Freitas in Palmela, the fourth-generation leader of the family estate founded in 1920. Born in 1952, she moved from social work to run the business in the early 1990s, growing it to over 500 hectares (60% Castelão). The company produces about 8 million bottles yearly, exports over 35% and has won 2,500+ awards. Succession is family-led: daughter Joana is the designated next-generation manager.
